How to set up e-prescription (eRx) in Carepatron

How do I set up e-Rx in Carepatron and start prescribing electronically?

Updated over a week ago

Carepatron now lets you use electronic prescribing (eRx) through its integration with DoseSpot, so you can send prescriptions electronically directly within the platform. This feature simplifies your prescription workflow by connecting your workspace, clinicians, and patients to the DoseSpot e-prescribing network.

In this article, we will cover the following:

Note: This feature is currently in Alpha release, which means the feature is still in early testing and gradual rollout. It is available to a limited group of users while we monitor performance, gather feedback, and make improvements before a wider release.

Register your clinic

Clinic registration is the first step to setting up e-prescribing for your workspace. This connects your Carepatron workspace to DoseSpot and prepares it for clinician onboarding.

  1. Go to Settings → My Profile → Connected Apps.

  2. Find the DoseSpot card and click Connect workspace account.

  3. Fill in clinic details:

    • Workspace name (pre-filled)

    • Select or add a location

    • Address, city, state, zip code, country

    • Phone number (+1 for US numbers)

  4. Click Connect.

  5. Confirm registration:

    • Workspace shows Admin badge

    • Clinic location shows a green checkmark

  6. Options:

    • Connect another clinic – Add more locations

    • Connect your account – Proceed to clinician registration

Add clinicians

Clinician registration connects individual practitioners to the DoseSpot network. Each clinician must provide personal and professional details, assign clinic locations, and complete identity verification.

To register:

  1. Click Connect your account under the registered clinic.

  2. Fill in professional details:

    • First and last name (pre-filled)

    • Date of birth

    • NPI (Type 1) number

    • Phone and professional address

  3. Assign clinic locations:

    • Select one or more locations

    • Once a location is selected, it expands to show additional optional fields specific to that location:

      • Use as default – Set this location as your default prescribing location.

      • DEA number (Optional) – Your Drug Enforcement Administration number for this location.

      • NA DEA number (Optional) – Your state-level narcotic authority DEA number.

      • Medical license number (Optional) – Your medical license number for the state where this location operates.

  4. Submit registration by clicking Connect. The DoseSpot card will update to show your email address along with two status indicators:

    • Account created – Displays a loading spinner while DoseSpot processes your registration. This typically takes less than a minute. Once confirmed, a green checkmark (✅) will appear.

    • ePrescribing agreement & ID verification – Initially shows a red indicator (❌) as this step is not yet complete.

  5. Once confirmed, click Finalize your account.

  6. Complete identity proofing:

    • Sign DoseSpot ePrescribing Authorization Agreement

    • Complete Experian Facial Proofing

⚠️Important: Clinicians cannot prescribe until identity verification is complete.

Setting up two-factor authentication (TFA) for controlled substances

To prescribe controlled substances electronically (EPCS), you’ll need to complete an additional verification step by setting up two-factor authentication (TFA).

While you can begin prescribing standard medications as soon as identity proofing is complete, any attempt to prescribe controlled substances before TFA setup will trigger a DoseSpot warning, “You do not have permission to send controlled substances,” which is expected until setup is finalized.

To complete TFA activation in DoseSpot:

  1. Click the bell icon (🔔) in the top right navigation bar. A red badge will indicate a pending notification.

  2. In the notifications panel, select the “DoseSpot” tab.

  3. Click “Complete TFA Activation,” shown in green beneath the tab.

  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete two-factor authentication setup.

  5. Once activation is complete, your account will be authorized to prescribe controlled substances.

If the “Complete TFA Activation” notification is no longer visible, you can still set up TFA through your DoseSpot profile by following these steps:

  1. Click the profile icon in the top right navigation bar.

  2. Select “Profile Settings” from the dropdown menu.

  3. Scroll to the Prescriber PIN section.

  4. Click “Create/Update PIN Number” and follow the on-screen prompts to complete TFA setup.

With both identity proofing and TFA completed, you are ready to prescribe controlled substances.

Simply re-enter the prescription that was previously blocked and follow the standard prescription workflow, noting that you will be prompted to enter your PIN when approving and sending the prescription.

After submission, DoseSpot will display a confirmation message indicating the prescription was sent successfully.

:warning:

Please Note: DoseSpot has identified an issue where Identity Proofing (IDP) messages from Experian are being sent to spam by phone providers. They will be implementing additional text in application to inform clinicians of the issue, expected to go live in their April 2026 release.

In the meantime, clinicians attempting IDP and not receiving text messages should be advised to check their spam.
