AI Prompts: How to Use Them Effectively
AI Prompts: How to Use Them Effectively
Updated over a month ago

⚠️ AI prompts only work if there is a transcript available. Ensure you have generated a transcript of the relevant conversation or dictation before using an AI prompt.

What Are AI Prompts?

AI prompts are pieces of content you create to give context to the AI, helping it understand what you need a transcript to achieve. These prompts work from transcripts, which means there must first be a transcript of a conversation or dictation. If you are unfamiliar with creating transcripts, refer to these articles:

Adding an AI Prompt

To add an AI prompt, write a clear and specific instruction for what you need the note to do. For example:

  • "Use the information in this progress note to draft a referral letter."

  • "Summarize this session into key takeaways for the patient."

  • "Turn this conversation into a detailed treatment plan."

Making AI Prompts Reusable

You can add AI prompts to templates to turn them into AI-powered tools. Once a template includes an AI prompt, it can be reused as often as you need, streamlining your workflow.

Example Workflow:

  1. Create a new progress note template.

  2. Include an AI prompt such as: "Use this template to generate a treatment summary."

  3. Save the template.

  4. Use the template for future notes that have transcriptions, leveraging the AI prompt each time.

Advanced Prompting

When you create a template in Carepatron, you’ll encounter three essential components that guide the AI in generating accurate content. You can use any combination of these components to provide clear instructions on how you want your notes or documents to be generated. These components include:

1. Placeholders

Placeholders represent text that describes the type of information to be displayed. They are wrapped in square brackets (e.g., [Patient Name], [Date of Birth]) and act as markers where specific details will be inserted when the template is used. For example:

  • [Patient Name] will be automatically replaced with the patient’s actual name.

  • [Insert past medical history] will populate with details of the patient’s medical history.

By default, placeholders should be followed by an AI instruction as described below.

2. AI Instructions

AI instructions tell the AI how to process or present certain information within the template. For instance, you might add an instruction to include only relevant past medical history explicitly mentioned in the clinical notes. These instructions are wrapped in round brackets, like so:

  • (Only include relevant past medical history if explicitly mentioned in the transcript or contextual notes.)

This ensures the generated document includes only verified and accurate information. AI instructions can be used alone at the end of the template for general guidance or alongside placeholders for specific instructions. For example:

  • [Insert past medical history](Describe in detail, only include relevant past medical history if explicitly mentioned in the transcript or contextual notes.)

3. Verbatim Text

Verbatim text refers to content that remains unchanged every time the template is used. It is wrapped in quotation marks and ensures consistency for details that should not vary. This is useful for static information such as a referring doctor’s name, qualifications, and contact details. For instance:

"Dr. John Doe
Physical Therapy Specialist
MBChB (UCT)
Contact: dr.doe@example.com"

This text will appear exactly as written in every document generated from the template.

By combining these three components effectively, you can create versatile and precise templates for a wide range of use cases.
